(C-UAS)

Unmanned Arial Vehicles (UAV) commonly referred to as “drones” can be flown almost anywhere. The Drones advertent or inadvertently provoked one of the costliest aviation incidents witnessed at Gatwick airport in 2018, this was the largest public interruption at a major airport faced by the airport authorities without any mitigation options to deploy. The tangible, and intangible damages drones caused in this single incident which thousands of flights were canceled, more than 140,000 passengers were left on the ground and airlines reportedly lost around 70MM USD creating a large spotlight on the use, control, and mitigation of drones. The drone incident at Gatwick Airport was not an isolated incident, drones continue creating issues and threats to the regular aviation at airports and increase public security issues mainly in urban areas. 

Notwithstanding the obvious security risks that drones create while airborne, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) will become the norm in several industries, more recently telecom companies have integrated drones into the cellular connectivity infrastructure (4G LTE and 5G) providing Drone flights beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS), this will increase exponentially potential threats for airports and for regular aviation.
